GSPIA, like most schools of public management and policy, offers several specialized courses dealing with ethics, accountability, and responsible leadership. In addition to these specialized courses, the Johnson Institute is promoting the idea of teaching ethics and leadership across the curriculum, especially in core courses that students are required to take to complete their degree programs. This approach, in combination with specialized courses, has several advantages:

  • Pedagogically, this approach ensures that GSPIA students will learn concepts and methods of ethical reasoning and leadership within the policy and management contexts that are most meaningful and appealing to them. For example, students who are seeking a degree in international development will be confronted with ethical dilemmas and choices, not in a hypothetical vacuum, but within the context of actual policy and management problems drawn from the field of international development.

  • Also, this approach guarantees that all GSPIA students will develop ethical reasoning and leadership skills but they will do so in a context that is tailored to their particular academic interests and professional aspirations.

  • Finally, this approach helps to develop the skills of faculty members to teach ethical reasoning and leadership. This approach promotes dialogue among faculty and encourages the exchange of ideas on teaching methods and cases, thereby continuously improving the teaching of ethics and responsible leadership.

The Johnson Institute provides faculty members with a training workshop on teaching ethics and leadership across the curriculum. Faculty who complete the workshop are given curriculum development grants that can be used to purchase teaching materials, develop cases, attend conferences, arrange for distinguished guest lectures, and develop creative techniques for teaching ethics and accountability in their core courses. Also, the Johnson Institute convenes periodic meetings of instructors to share ideas on curriculum development, learning objectives, and pedagogical techniques.

More information about teaching ethics and accountability, in other schools as well as GSPIA, can be found in the Pedagogy and Teaching portion of our site.
