Teaching

The goal of the Johnson Institute’s teaching program is to improve the knowledge and skills of GSPIA and University students and faculty in understanding ethics and leadership in public service. Our philosophy is that the topics of leadership, ethics, and accountability should not be reserved for one or a few courses, but rather can and should be infused in a wide variety of courses on management and decision making. This approach has several advantages:

  • Ensures that GSPIA students will learn concepts and methods of ethical reasoning and leadership within the policy and management contexts that are most meaningful and appealing to them.
  • Guarantees that all GSPIA students will develop ethical reasoning and leadership skills, but they will do so in a context that is tailored to their particular academic interests and professional aspirations.
  • Helps develop the skills of faculty members to teach ethical reasoning and leadership.
  • Promotes dialogue among faculty which encourages the exchange of ideas on teaching methods and cases.

Training Workshops

The Johnson Institute provides GSPIA and University faculty members with training workshops on teaching ethics and leadership across the curriculum. Also, the Johnson Institute convenes periodic meetings of instructors to share ideas on curriculum development, learning objectives, and pedagogical techniques.

Curriculum Development

The Johnson Institute provides financial support for courses on leadership and ethics as well as providing substantive input on other courses within the GPSIA curriculum.

Leadership Portfolio Program

The Johnson Institute launched the Leadership Portfolio program in August 2009. This program provides students with classroom and extracurricular opportunities to enhance their leadership skills and credentials.
